Nocturnal Activities
From FooCamp09
Suggestions/plots for fun in the wee hours.
Fingerstyle guitar for strummers.
Werewolf games typically break out around 10 or 11 PM, last half an hour each, and can go all night until sunrise. They're a great way to meet new people and practice psychological warfare. Michael Lopp has a great blog post about how Werewolf can teach you project management strategy as well, bonus! There's also ample geeking out on game theory. If you've never played and want to skim the rules before you come, this introduction to Werewolf page explains it perfectly. You can also just drop-in and play, or watch a game and then jump in. It's easy to pick up as you go!
Other board games: Christopher Brown is bringing both chess and go, not for long games but for blitz or 9x9, preferably while drinking the Scotch below.
Scotch or Wine tasting Did this years past. Who is up for it this year? If there are other Scotch drinkers, we should make a list and cover Islay, Speyside, etc.
- Tradition in years past is this is Saturday night, yes?
- (Peter Corbett, peter@istrategylabs.com, @corbett0000) I'm in. I'll bring some Macallan 12 year.
- (Christopher Brown, cb@opscode.com, Twitter: @skeptomai) I'll be bringing a bottle of Glenmorangie.
- (Andre Charland emailed me (cb) and is bringing a bottle of something as well).
- (Lenore Edman, @1lenore) I'm bringing Laphroaig 10 year.
- (Zach Klein, zklein@gmail.com) I hope you'll let a bourbon drinker into the club. I'll bring some of Hudson Valley's finest 'Baby Bourbon'.
- (Paul Bloore, pbloore@ideeinc.com) I'm up for a bourbon anytime, but I'll bring a bottle of Talisker for the evening.
- My name is Scott, does that mean I can just mooch off everyone else? :) @berkun
- And, I'll help drink the scotch and bourbon, but will bring a bottle of my new favorite brown poison, Zaya Gran Reserva Rum -- much more of a "party" sipping whiskey.
OOF, the reverse scavenger hunt, is back Saturday night. You'll need to be one part maker, one part faker: Show up empty-handed, join a team, and you've got five minutes to scavenge for any 10 objects you want. THEN you get the list. Your mission: "find" the 10 objects on the list in the stuff you've already scavenged. Live demos are required to convince the celebrity judges that you've got everything on the list. Previous OOFs featured memorable moments such as Greg Stein giving birth, Cory Ondrejka getting drunk, and Tom Coates making out with a missile. (if you are interested in helping come up with the list, or being a celebrity judge, @Twitter me! I'm Jane McGonigal @avantgame.)
Hide and go seek in the dark - Anyone interested? Think the O'Reilly crew will mind if we run around their offices and hide under their desks? :)
Crafting corner Anybody interested in sitting around making things? I'll be bringing some hyperbolic knitting and crochet samples - see http://theiff.org/ - and I can teach people a variety of things, like crochet, how to work with a drop spindle, sewing including how to work with patterns, and french wire beading. If anyone is interested, ping Cat Allman at cat@catface.org and let me know.
Crafting corner ++ Interactive electronics amd musical instruments without metals? I will bring some new unusual e-textiles and teach some of the weirder techniques I am experimenting with like felted electronics. Ever tried machine-felting an led? Bring your lilypads or Arduinos. Let me know if you are interested so I know how much stuff to bring. Adrian Freed: adrian@cnmat.berkeley.edu.
Settlers of Catan Settlers was the first German-style board game to achieve popularity outside Europe, and has been called the killer app of designer board games.
- (Zach Klein, zklein@gmail.com) I'm bringing a board, and I'm willing to teach anyone how to play.
